Transocean's Deepwater Horizon cost about $350 million to build and as much as $1 million a day to run. BP first contracted it in 2001 for use in the Gulf of Mexico, where BP produced about 10 percent of its 4 million barrels a day in 2010, according to a report commissioned by the White House. The Macondo well held about 50 million barrels of oil -- about two and a half day's worth at U.S. consumption levels.
